Masking the engine for paint was the most distasteful job at Flint. Often, assignment of this job was for punitive purposes. As a result, the painting was NOT uniform from unit to unit. I would estimate that about half the pads were painted at Flint.
NCRS wants a clean pad in order for broach marks to be discovered. Broach marks were absent from the pad (observed by the naked eye) whenever a fresh bit (cutting edge) was installed in the broach. Recently, at convention, an original engine was judged a restamp because no broach marks were present.
