On my recently purchased 69, which was optioned with a TI system (box still in place) I discovered a distributor with points (CDI)! Looks like some one swapped it out years ago... My question is - does the TI box (amplifier) server any function for this type setup? Can it be removed? ... And, if I decide to restore the system back to stock condition (put in a TI distrib), will I notice any improvement (or loss) in performance? ...or will it be a major headache? Thanks

Re: 69 TI system
The point dist. operates indepedently of the amp. Chances are the TI died, which is why a point dist. was substituted, so you have no way of knowing if the amp and harness are functional.
If you want to return it to original condition you would have to buy a proper magentic pulse dist. I've bench tested the system and found problems by setting up the system on a bench, adding 12v power from a battery and spinning the dist. with and electric drill.
The first time my system died it was a lead from the main power transistor, which is mounted in the heat sink that popped off the board. I soldered it back on.
The second time was corrosion in one of the three harness terminals at the amp connector due to water intrusion.

Re: 69 TI system
John, several of my TI original cars had been fitted with points/condensor type distributor for whatever reason before I bought em. I just changed one of my 67's back and cranked it with the TI for the first time yesterday. There are some minor wiring changes to make in making the change in either direction, involving the pink wires at the cowl. If the conversion was done right, there's a ballast resistor now in the system which would have be removed if you go back to TI. As far as performance gain by going back to the TI, I doubt it, but don't have back to back comparison. I put the 67 435 back to TI just for originality sake, but may not do the others just because the components are so expensive. Every one of these cars has the box still on the inner skirt, but the TI distributors are long gone and one well known TI specialist quoted me $1100 for a rebuilt one.- Top

Re: 69 TI system
While a 1970, I have the same issue with a points set up in place of the TI system. The car was original from NJ and the moisture was not so kind to the system, so the previous owner swapped it out in '78 for reliabilty/ease of repair.
The original pulse amp and wiring harness are still present. I will leave them in place to possible save some money or grief if I convert back later. I too have found full TI set ups with matching # coil and distributor to run up to $1500.- Top

Re: 69 TI system
John, I've only got 1 69 that wasn't SHP (TI mandatory) and I can't remember off the top of my head exactly how the ballast resistor is mounted on it, but I assume on the cowl behind the distributor, judging from how the two pink wires are, length wise, in the new harness I just got. I can look on the 400 car tomorrow if somebody else doesn't answer tonight. I bought a 'Lectric Limited laminated wiring scematic for my 67 and while it's real nice, it's not real helpful in determining exactly how the wiring was done on the TI cars. It does show the TI harness, but fails to show the pink wire differential on the TI cars. On their brand new harness it required changing the end on the pink wire that would've originally gone to the coil, so it could plug into a wire from the TI harness. This wire was actually doubled on the points/condensor type ignition with a 12 ga. pink going back in the harness, which wasn't even present in my 2 TI cars. It also required snipping the end off one of the pink wires that would go to the ballast resistor and wrapping the other pink wire to the ballast resistor since it isn't used. It seems like I may have seen in the 69 assembly manual exactly what the change was when the TI was added. I don't think the 69 harness requires as much stuff as the 67 does, but it's been so long since I fooled with one of mine I can't remember. I was a little surprised that the 67 repro harness didn't have specific instructions included for using with a TI car. I'd have had a very difficult time figuring it out with just a schematic if I hadn't had 2 original cars sitting there to go by.- Top
