My 77 was missing the luggage rack when I acquired it. I have seen racks that attach with 8 mounting points and racks that attach with 6 mounting points. Is one a factory rack and the other a dealer installed item? My car has 6 holes for mounting, but I would want to install whatever was factory original. Thanks for any suggestions. Steve

'77 was one of few times when a luggage rack WAS a factory, regular production option! The car could have come with or without the factory installed luggage rack. If it came without the rack, the dealer (or subsequent owner) could have installed one....
Typical, dealer installed luggage racks had 6-legs while the factory option (V54) used 8-legs giving more surface support for the Roof Panel feature (clip your T-Tops on). The 8-legged factory rack has 'nubs' on the inside rails adjacet to outer rails to position and keep the roof panel clamp-on assys from sliding fore/aft.
Both racks (dealer installed and factory installed) were chrome plated steel tubes. Some reproduction racks are of SS construction. -

Jack, Thanks for the info. Some additional questions. Is there any indication anywhere on the car as to whether it was originally equipped with V54 factory luggage rack? Since it appears that mine was not since it has a 6 point mount, is it possible to drill the rear deck and install a correct 8 point rack - or is it too hard to get to the mounting points with the body on?
