Does anyone know the part number of the brake drums for a 1961? Should it be stamped on the drum? Thanks, Joe #37862

Joe-----
The original PART number for 1961 Corvette brake drums, front and rear, was GM #3752622. I don't think that this number was cast anywhere on the drums. However, another CASTING number may have been. If so, I don't know what it is.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1961 BRAKE DRUMS
The two original rear drums from my SWC have different casting numbers - 3752623 and 3828688. The '63 rear drums are the same as the solid axle front and rear drums, except HD brakes.
There appears to be several casting numbers that were used over time. If your castings have the max diameter stamped or molded into the material, they are post '68 OTC replacements.

I agreed. The casting number is indented and part of the casting mold.
Do you have both the 623 and 688? Know why there are two? Any other casting numbers for the 11x2 drums.
One other question: Do you have any 63-64 2.5" drums and what casting numbers are they.

Duke----
GM #3828688 is a later CASTING number first used, I believe, for 1963. However, functionally, it is interchangeable with the earlier castings. 63 models could have either casting. However, the 61 could not have originally used the 3828688 casting. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1961 BRAKE DRUMS
The casting configuration was changed. A cast circumferential recess was still present for the anti-chatter spring but the "U" groove, in which the backing plate cirfumference rides, was eliminated. All the NORS drums use this latter configuration and are quite obvious to the experienced judge. During production, an NOS, correctly configured drum WAS available in a yellow and black box. In the seventies the design was changed. I suppose because the lip on the drum was fragile and subject to damage when roughly handled. All the NORS pieces were made in Canada with the latter part number.
Today's "reproduction" drums have neither the lip for the "U" groove nor a recess for the anti-chatter spring. One gentleman in the hobby machines a groove for this spring withour regard for the material thickness of the drum thereby creating a brake drum with MUCH less strength than original. In my opinion they are dangerous.
