Airfreight of Lucite paint for C3 (1980)

    Dear Corvette friends,

I need to buy a small quantity of DuPont Lucite paint to restore my 1980 Corvette (Lucite 99s, solid black, GM code 19, 1980). This paint is no longer available in Europe, or Sweden where I live, but it is still produced by Dupont US and can be bought from automotive paint dealers in areas with less restrictive VOC regulations (for instance in New York or NJ area). I have called several and they are happy to sell me the paint but they do not want to handle the paperwork and special boxes required for overseas airfreight shipping of flammable goods. I have already a company that will handle the actual air freight but they cant do the paperwork/packing since it must be done by the company sending it.

    - Can anyone give me the name of a dealer that still carry the Dupont Lucite products and are willing to help to prepare the goods for sending it by airfreight? (You need to fill in the correct DGR certificate for air freight and be able to pack it in the correct way in UN approved boxes and to assume responsibility for that the packing have been correctly performed.)

    Or

    - Does anyone know of a dangerous goods handling company in NJ, which would be willing to handle the special packing and certificates for airfreight shipping if I get the paint to them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Best Regards/Mikael

    Mikael,

I think that this paint is also still available in England. I know that another frequenter of this board is a member of the England Chapter, and has commented to me that they are able to acquire lacquer that is actually much better than what we can get in the US.

I don't know if that helps, but I thought it wouldn't hurt.

I don't know if they sell outside the U.S. but Sherwin Williams has a nice black lacquer. Just used it cause I couldn't find 99s.

Tell me who still has Dupont 99s and 3696 on the shelf?

The formula for GM black acrylic lacquer did not change from it's first use in '58 to it's phaseout, which was in the early eighties.

It's so common that most vendors sell it premixed. The PPG number is DDL 9300. You might see if you can still get it from a local PPG source.

I got Sherwin Williams. But This original post made it sound like Dupont 99s was still on the shelf.

The SW paint works better I think. But I could use a gallon of Dupont to finish a job started with it.

            Duke,

It's the aromatics and additives that have changed in lacquer paint. While the "formulas" have not changed, the extras have. It's not the same stuff it was 20-30 years ago. It should, however, give you the same color.

Tim, I may be able to come up with a gallon if you still need it. I ran across a dealer in a small town about 40 miles from here that had several still on the shelf. He said that the Dupont rep told him it was being discontinued and he'd have to send it back then if he was going to receive credit. I bought a gallon and put it up for one of my cars. Several months later he asked me if I needed any more of it, that he'd neglected to return it and now it was probably too late. Seems like he wanted around $100. a gallon which I thought was high. I don't recall the name of the place, but we routinely pass it going to the lakehouse.
