    RADIAL TIRES FOR 1970 454 CPE

    I NEED TO PURCHASE A SET OF RADIALS FOR MY 1970 454 AUTO CPE. I AM MORE INTERESTED IN LOOKS THAN SPEED RATING AS THE CAR DOESN'T GET DRIVEN OVERLY HARD BUT IT DOES GET DRIVEN FAIRLY OFTEN. I REALLY WANTED WIDE OVALS BUT THEY ARE ONLY AVAIL IN BIAS PLY. THE CAR IS MAROON SO I'M NOT SURE RED LINES WOULD LOOK GOOD. THINKING POSSIBLY GOLD LINES,(EVEN IF THEY WEREN'T ORIGINAL). OR NARROW WHITES. I LOOKED AT SOME OF THE TIRE SITES BUT DIDN'T FIND ANY OLD VETTES IN THEIR SURVEYS,(MOSTLY ACCORDS AND SUCH). WHO HAS TIRES THAT THEY REALLY RECCOMMEND?

      Have you tried Coker tire in Tennessee? (Website is www.coker.com) A friend of mine had a set of Goodrich blackwalls on his 67 roadster and changed to their redlines. The car looks a heck of alot more stock now than before. Web catalog is just as informative as the paper one, including pictures. I know they have goldlines in a 75 series along with red and white.

          When the 255/60-15 Goodyear Eagle GT's have to be replaced on my 70 coupe I will probably put Goodyear GT 2's on it. The current GT's on my 70 are old, but really look with no weather cracking on the sidewalls. I have never owned a set of tires that have held up so well in appearance for their age. I have over 40K on these tires.

              Al,
              If I am not mistaken Coker only has Bias Ply tires. I really like driving on radials better. I have some red line radials from Diamondback Classics on my 67 and it drives SO much better than the bias ply tires did.

                  I agree with you comments on the Goodyear GT tires. I have used them on the 70 and 71 as street tires. I use the 225 X 70 X 15 size as I prefer the look to the 255 X 60 but they handle super. Like yours mine are 20+ years old and still look perfect. With the little driving I do I hope they last forever. They are worth looking for at swap meets etc.
