    Exhaust Manifold Bolts '64 327/300

I am replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets, should I use hi-temp anti-seize liquid on the bolts or just put them in dry?

I have the exhaust manifold loose and the old gaskets out. Any tips before I put the new ones in and tighten it up?

    Thanks!

The OEM manifolds did not originally have gaskets at the head interface and should not need them uless they are warped.

I use antiseize on exhaust manifold/system bolts and recommend it. The conventional silver anti-seize paste is suitable for high temps, and I have used the high temp liquid on 02 sensors.

I don't think your car had exhaust manifold gaskets between the head and the manifold. You usually don't need them.

Yes on the anti-seize. I was also able to find stainless steel exhaust manifold bolts, although this is noticeably different from stock.

Don't forget the spacers. They look like thick washers. I believe they go on the 4 bolts at the end, not the 2 in the middle. But the AIM should show this. The exhaust manifold bolts are those ones with the circle cast on the head. If you replace them, be careful. They are an odd length - not one of the usual ones sold in 1/4" increments. You need the right length bolts and the washers, or the bolts will bottom out.

          Isn't Stainless an "UPGRADE"?

the longer bolt can bottom out in the hole and crack or break out the casting into the water jacket. a quick fix is to install a allen set screw with lots of epoxy then install a shorter exhaust manifold bolt.

              Best Fix Is Not To

              upgrade in the first place!

Thanks boys! I used gaskets, anti-seize lube and the original bolts with the french locks. The car is not judged so I'm not worried about the gaskets. I was worried about the exhaust leak but it is now no more!
