    68 turn signals

I just had a soft top put on my 68.On the way home I noticed that the turn signals don't work but the hazards do.The fuse looks ok.Where should I look next to find the problem. The installer is out of town for two weeks.

Given that the flashers work, the problem is likely in the turn signal switch. The turn signals, flashers, and brake lights are all one circuit after they leave the switch. I would probably access the switch and apply some contact cleaner before trying anything more time consuming and costly. I am assuming that the 68 is wired similarly to the earlier cars.

      Robert-----

I don't see a relationship between having a convertible top installed and a failed turn signal system; I expect that it's just coincidental.

In any event, as Ed mentioned, your problem could well be the directional switch. Let's hope it's not, though, since that switch can be a bear to replace.

On a 1968, the directional switch flasher and the hazard warning flasher are seperate. The hazard warning flasher is plugged into the fuse block assembly and the directional flasher is located just beneath the lower right side instrument panel. It snaps into a clip at this location. I would suggest taking it out and replacing it. This is a VERY simple operation and always a first step before you even THINK about replacing the turn signal switch. The flasher which you need is GM #10041073 or Tung Sol #323.

        Joe-

But didn't later 68's have the turn signal flasher moved to above the passenger side kick panel? I seem to remember this in my AIM, but on my early '68, it's clip was screwed to the bracket that the front end of the shifter console screws to, as you indicated... The wiper relay on the right side, and the flasher on the left.

The location near the kick panel is the one that I was referring to. It is on a clip attached near the lower right corner of the right side dash panel. I should have used the term "dash panel", though, instead of "instrument panel".

Thanks for the help, but I still have not found the problem. This was an early 68 so it was mounted on the drivers side just below the radio(good directions Joe). The reason I had mentioned the top being installed was that I don't know if a wiring harness runs near the frame for the top (frame was taken off sand blasted and painted) or if the installer could have leaned against the turn signal arm and damaged it.
