    A.I.R. System /1969/427/390 Coupe /AC

I'm looking for advice on how to put together an A.I.R. system without having to re-finance the house and yet good enough for judging. At this point I don't have anything except the correct exaust manifolds with plugs. I'm sure there must be ways and places to purchases these pieces for reasonable amounts. What in this system is dated?(6/27/69 or earlier for my 427) The pump in the assembly manual is called a production part. Which pump and pulley should be used? All help is appreciated. Thanks, Art Ives

There are "conrtradictions" in the information which you provided. You mentioned that you would like a system "...good enough for judging..." and you also said that you didn't want to "...refinance the house..." to pay for one. A system that will garner maximum judging points will NOT be inexpensive. You may not have to refinance the house, but it will cost a considerable amount of money unless you get real lucky.

You can put togther a system which would be functional using currently available GM parts, rebuilt parts, and reproduction parts. The exception here is the diverter valve. These are long-since discontinued and difficult to locate. The Corvette configuration was unique to Corvettes.

As Joe said, be prepared to pay some good, hard-earned money for this setup. If you need the entire system, minus your manifolds, I think you will find one of the vendors who sell through the Driveline to be exceptionally helpful. I bought a complete 72 system, every bolt, part, hose, etc, through Bill Hodel. He description of the condition of the parts left a little to be desired though. The parts were actually NICER than he led me to believe.

I did have to bring along a Brinks truck and security guard to safeguard and transport the cash though.

Thanks, I had the feeling that this system wasn't going to be easy on me. I have a fortune tied up in ths car and still can't see any progress. Everythng I touch needs repaired or replaced. I'm also working on the windshield header and see separation on the edges in the original glass. Don't know whether to replace it or not. Thanks, I'll take the easy out and call Bill Hodel.

Art, before you mortgage the house, take a look at the judging manuals to see what kind of a point loss this will be. A certain, long time member of the NCRS likes to talk about points per dollar. Now I wouldn't want to mention Terry McManmon's name but he is well known for discussing this item in detail. Anyhow, if your point loss is not huge for not even having an AIR system then you can make up the points somewhere else. For instance, dealing from memory, a totally incorrect battery cost me 25 points. If I choose to buy a repro Delco R89 I can get those 25 points back for a little less than $200. Assuming that your hit for an missing AIR system isn't much bigger than that, wouldn't it make sense to look elsewhere for the points? For my first ever Flight judging I spent a fair amount of money on minutiae. By simply ensuring my AM portion of my radio worked, I could have received another 12 points.
Just a thought and my opinion.

Thanks Gary, I'll look at that. Makes sense, Art
