I am rebuilding the rear axle on my 1970 coupe. It has been serviced about 15 years ago by a chev dealer. The option code on the build sheet is GV4 which I believe is for a 3.36 ratio. I have the L46 with 4speed. It is difficult to read the numbers cast into the differential housing even though it is out, but I think there are raised letters on one side "GM 3899143" with a clock, and "CONU or CONV" on the other side. These don't seem to correspond to published #s I have. Am I reading them incorrectly or looking in the wrong location, or has this housing been replaced in the past? Thanks

Re: 1970 rear axle code

The GM #3899143 casting is the correct differential housing casting for all 1967 through 1979 Corvettes. So, you have the correct housing casting. However, the housing casting has no relevence, whatsoever, to what gears are installed inside. The housing was the same for all ratios during these years. Better information regarding the original gear ratio will be found stamped on the bottom of the housing, just forward of the cover attachment. You should find a date and a 3 alpha character code beginning with "C". Given the information which you provided, yours will likely be "CAM".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 rear axle code
Thank you for your advice, Joe. Since I posted this question, I noticed a photo illustration of the stamping on the 1970 registry (nicely put together by Juliet Page). If I use my imagination, it appears that an "E1" is faintly stamped in mine, but nothing else (my car was built May 26th). Either it is a replacement, or the stamping didn't survive the surface rust. It will go back under the car, and I will learn more about it when I have the car judged.- Top
