on my recent purchase of a 71 LS5 .. I changed out the temp sending unit .. the temp always seemed a little high .. well as it tunrs out it simply reads high .. I proved this when I used a pot of boiling water and the sending unit and had my wife read the gage inside the car .. well mother nature tells us that water boils at 212F exept when it is read by my temp system .. it boils at 250F ... even at 170F my gage reads 210F .... can anyone tell me where to look to find this 40F increase in actual to gage reading

Re: temp system mis calibration 71 LS5
Some of the aftermarket sending units are calibrated wrong from Delco. I have even seen ads stating a 30 deg miscalibration footnote. you may want to watch the swap meets for an accurate one (probably used). If it is consistently off over the entire range (reading hi) you could add some resistance in series with the sender. You should be able to arrive at a fairly accurate reading at one given temp. Select the usual running temp 180-190 degrees and see if you can get close using your hot water method for calibration. That way when things are close to normal it'll indicate correctly. It's better than nothing......- Top

Dale----
Why did you "change out" the temp unit? Was the old one non-functional for some reason? If not, re-install it. The currently available GM/Delco sending units seem to have this calibration problem. There are some aftermarket units which have been recommended in the past by others that are reported to be accurate. Check the archives for info.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
