    Grade 8 bolt vs grade 5 c3 72

Hello, I have just acquired some knowledge about the Gaded bolt after i had to replace a bolt that needed cut off on my control arm (1972). Such as grade 5 has 3 lines and grade 8 has 6 lines on the head. Every bolt i have to get for a heavy duty application will be grade 8 from now on but i was looking at the alternator and some of the external mounting bracket bolt and they appear to have 3 lines on them making them grade 5. My question is grade 5 also a very strong bolt? I noticed that a lower control arm bolt on one of my other cars i put on last year was a grade 5 (3 lines) and is working fine. How srong is a grade 5 bolt? Thanks Eric

You will probably not have any trouble with any bolt under there, but regulations require manufactures and others to use grade 8 on suspension and other automotive applications. It depends on what the component is. Most applications that are not under high stress or are not critical like the suspension will be lesser grades.

According to some online references, grade 5 bolts are rated to 120,000 psi minimum tensile strength while grade 8 are rate to 150,000 psi minimum tensile strength.
