    On a 1979 vette

the fan clutch has a spring if you tighten the spring does that make the fan stay engaged longer

    Re: fan clutch

There is no 'adjustment' on the fan clutch of this era. VERY early fan clutches ('58 era) did have user adjustable features but this was short lived and dropped. The clutch's %-slip vs. RPM vs. Temp characteristics are fully defined and FIXED by the bi-metal spring and clutch internal elements.

If your fan clutch isn't working to spec (too much slip), it's most likely the result of typical wear and fluid loss. You have two basic alternatives:

    (1) Go get a service replacement fan clutch (still available from Chevy)
    (2) Preserve the originality of your existing clutch by having it restored

There are numerous threads in the archieves to an NCRS member, Fred Oliva, and his company, Vintage Automotive Research, in Florida who does fan clutch restoration service.
