    Anybody Have An Idea

why "message deleted by poster" is necessary? Seems ridiculous to me but, then again most things do anyway

Sounds strange to me too Jer, but perhaps some people don't like the idea of others watching their basic questions... human behavior. Just a thought.

Re: Anybody Have An Idea *TL*

      Jerry,

Posters have been able to delete their messages after they posted them for a long time. One of the not to recent modifications was to leave the "Message Deleted by Poster" as a placeholder so the thread would not break apart. I go through every evening and permanently delete all of them that I can, but if they have messages attached to them I leave them alone. Deleting them leaves an orphan "Re: Answer to your question" with no question showing up. At least this way you know that a person did ask a question, and this is a response to that.

As to why someone posts a message and then comes back and deletes it, I can't answer. Sometimes if they don't preview the message, but post it directly it doesn't look like what they had in mind. They will delete it and start over. Just a thought.

John - it would be nice if we could go back and edit posts. If I make a big boo-boo the only way to correct it is to delete the message and start over.

When a post is deleted the thread rambles and certain responses appear in weird places out of context. That's when I delete.

That is what the preview feature is for. Try it. Press the preview button. Read over your post. If you like it scroll down to the bottom of the message, and post it. If there is something that needs to be changed make the corrections, then preview it again.

I always do that unless it is a very short answer.

I use a little shareware program called Spell Checker. It runs in the background, and I click on Ctrl-Alt-F12 to invoke it. It then spell checks the open text box. It works well on this board, or about any other open text program such as Notebook or Wordpad. You can find it at http://www.quinion.com/mqa/getspell.htm It is free to use for non commercial users. It is only a couple hundred kilobytes, so it downloads quick. I normally don't recommend to many programs, but this one and my virus checker are exceptions.

                    Just To Make Everybody Happy.........

why don't you just rename "Preview Message" to "Edit Message". After all, they are the same thing. Ahh,semantics!

"Preview Message" only works before you post - "Edit Message" works AFTER you post. We use this same software on our Vetteheads.com board, and we have it set to provide "Edit" capability for 30 minutes after posting a message.

                        Yes, I realize that, but..........

if you preview and check your message before posting it, then why would you want to further edit it after posting. C'mon, John, some of the folks who use this forum are engineers, many are fairly articulate, and most are fairly well educated.
I, for one, have never had reason to look for an "Edit Post" option. Occasionally, if something comes to mind after I post a message, I will post an "Addendum".
