    C3-LT1 oil pan removal

    To all,

My oil Pan has a leak and I have purchased the proper gaskets. Is there anything special that must be done to drop the oil pan or will it just unbolt and clear everything if I put it on jackstands? Is this an easy job?

    Thanks

Peter - it's easier than many other cars, you do have to drop the steering linkage on the idler arm...just use a good puller vs pickle fork to avoid damage to the boot. If you don't have one, Auto Zone lets you borrow tools...good luck!...Craig

      Peter -

If you set the timing index mark on the balancer at 5 o'clock, you'll have more clearance to remove/install the pan at the front (in that position, the front crank counterweight will be up out of the way).

Based on my experience with my 71 last winter, turning the crankshaft like this is mandatory if you want to get the pan out.

I went with the new 1-piece gasket from Fel-Pro, and I like it much more than 4 piece original-style ones. If you use a 1-piece unit, make sure you get the pan mounting flange straight. I had it practically perfectly flat before I reinstalled, and no leaks since then.

While you're in the area, consider replacing the rear main seal. You'd hate to have to do that again next winter.
