    Re: Dust shield color

    Terry-----

Actually, I don't think that I've ever seen a GM blueprint for a part which noted a corrosion protection specification, per se. The ones that I've seen for plated or otherwise finished parts actually specify the plating finish to be used (zinc, cadmium, chrome, etc.). Sometimes, this is followed by a GM specification number. However, I believe that the GM specification number refers to the specifics of the plating or other finishing process to be used. It may also contain a corrosion resistance specification, too, I suppose.

      Re: Part Numbers

Joe, Yes, Chevrolet Motor Division (which included Corvette) had all of block # 3 650 001 thru 4 000 000.
      and Delco Moraine Division, Dayton,Ohio had all of block 5 450 001 thru 5 475 000.
I still don't understand your terminology "originated differently" ?

Why is it that the front shields would have had part numbers from a series which had been assigned to Chevrolet Division whereas the rear "shields" had part numbers from a series which was assigned to Delco-Moraine Division?

          Re: Part Numbers

Joe, It's a long story, but without doing a ton of research it probably went something like this. If a GM affiliated supplier submitted a drawings for an item they wanted to sell to Chevy and after a review by the releasing engineer, if he approved their drawing, he would send it to drafting and they would " Leroy" (I forget the exact spelling and don't have it available, but I think that's it) the supplier's drawing onto a Chevrolet drawing and give it a Chevrolet part number. This process took a lot of time and if time was short, last minute change to part or material, they could release a GM SUPPLIER'S ( but Never with an "outside" co.) drawing directly into the Chevy system. Once in the Chevrolet system, a drawing like this would probably stay as such forever and could be released for future MY's usage.
          Hope this helps.

Yes, it does help. A lot, in fact. It sounds like what you're saying is that the rear brake "shields" with the Delco-Moraine part numbers were designed by Delco-Moraine for Chevrolet and, consequently, assigned Delco-Moraine part numbers (Delco-Moraine was, of course, an internal GM supplier, at the time, for folks here that might not know). The front shields were designed internally by Chevrolet without Delco-Moraine involvement and, consequently, were assigned Chevrolet-series part numbers. Is that about correct?

              Re: Part Numbers

Joe, Sort of. The Delco parts would have been designed and assigned Delco part numbers BY Delco and then were released into the Chevrolet system for usage on the Corvette and/or other vehicle lines using Delco's part numbers. As long as it was a GM division, Chevrolet had the ability to release their part numbers into it's system. The fronts very well could have also been a Delco design , however, they could have gone into the Chevrolet system early enough to be issued a Chevrolet part number. Probably using the Leroy method that I mentioned earlier.
