    Corvette Central Oil Filler Tube

    I have installed a supposedly "correct" oil filler tube on my '56 from Corvette Central and cannot find an oil filler cap that will go on it. It seems as though the tube is too big. I have tried GM rpl. caps, as well as 2 NOS caps and none will slide over the tube. Am I missing something here or does Corvette Central not know what they are doing? I am getting a bit frustrated with these "CORRECT" parts that don't even come close.

    As long as were putting down Correct parts. You wont get a single chrome screw from Corvette America if you get the interior screw set. ????? What car did they use as an example? And they seem to have a strange idea of the color Camel.

    BTW: Anyone want to tell me what to buy from whom for real "Correct" parts? I can't be shopping in the right places yet.

      Welcome to the world of Corvette restoration. Rule number 1 is that there ARE no such things as correct reproduction parts. Rule 2 is that every reproduction parts needs to be modified to fit.

      Very rarely do I find a reproduction part that does not follow the above rules. If Corvette Central said it was "correct," go ahead and call them. Ask for Mike Samson. He will help you as much as anyone can. Maybe he'll give you the answer Corvette America uses with their interiors - "Our reproduction parts will only fit with our reproduction parts, not with originals." Yeah, OK.

      Now you know why good original or NOS parts cost so much.

        Steve, I have a CC "argent silver oil filler tube" on my 56 with a gennie oil cap. Aside from having to fight a little to get the tube into the manifold, all else fit well. Sounds like a quality control problem with your tube. I agree with Patrick - give Mike a call at CC. Although the Repro sources don't always have parts that are "correct", my experience is that they all want to do what's right for the restorer. Steve

          I bought reproduction oil filler tubes for both of my solid axles a few years ago from Corvette Central. Both of them fit the filler cap OK. Perhaps CC is getting them from a different source now.

            About two years ago there was a run of filler tubes that came out too big and it's impossible to fit an oil cap. I've sent six back so far and they have been replaced with correct tubes. Call customer service.

              I just found out the hard way about your statment :

              I just tried to fit Corvette America rear compartment door lid trim to the original frame. It was so nice of the A@#holes to make them 1/4'' smaller than the factory. This means that they don't fit in the factory frame. So why bother selling just the trim? They know it won't fit. DUH! Now they wasted another three or four days of my time. GOD D@# DON"T BUY CRAPPY PARTS. It wil just encourage them to make more!

              Christ, I'm just not cutout for this kind of punishment I guess. The last fifteen years I have restored military and civilian jeeps, trucks and armour. We must have a higher standard. In that world repro means "exact" not a 1/4 smaller not a differant color "exact". It's not that tuff to read a micrometer and right down the numbers that you see.

              I hope I can make it through the compartment door. It is the last ****ty part I have to install. I have been tempted to turn the jeep mounted Browning .50 cal on it several times. At a cost of 1800 dollars a minute, it's kinda pricey to use, but that's still cheaper than project corvette.

              Ya'all should bitch a little louder and demand more from your "resemblance" parts. Or there gonna keep on "loving" you. (not the word I would normally use)

              It has been a grueling six weeks. On a high note the motor runs like a Striped Ape. The resemblance cam and pistons fit! I hope the wife is happy now that she can street race mustangs.

                Tim,

                Now you know why many aviod Corvette America parts like the plague. They're not the worst of the bunch, but they're not far behind. It can pay to know the 2 or 3 suppliers out there who make certain repro parts, and then specify which one you want.

                By rear compartment doors, do you mean such as on my 71? I can't picture any on a 56, but then I'm not a Solid Axle guy. Call DeWitt's reproductions for better doors and trim, or at least EC Products (and that's not Eckler's).

                    Rob are you asking for civillian or military? Pick a model (CJ2a, M38a1 yada yada yada) And how correct do you want it to be? Most jeeps had a screw type 1 1/2 ton bottle looking jack. Stored in the compartment under the commanders seat.
