Back from Carlisle now after what turned out to be a great show despite the rain Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
Now I can use the help of my fellow C2 restorers/owners with a Pinch Welt/Cap question.
While gathering parts for my '63 Saddle Tan/Tan coupe several years ago I picked up new tan pinch welting and the stainless caps from a large, well known company (will leave anonymous)at Carlisle. When I got the parts shipped to me I noticed the new tan pinch welting was noticably smaller in "diameter" than the originals which I still had. Also, the molded-in pattern on the new welting ws not as original. Another thing,..they sent me 2 of the same (right side) caps instead of a Left and Right! I tried (recently) to install the new welting but it's simply not large enough to grab both the body and the vinyl covered cardboard trim panel. So, I simply decided to paint the black originals Saddle Tan using Eckler's Vinyl Spray Paint (excellent product) and the results were very good.
Now,...the problem has arisen with that darned pinch welt cap! The little bugger also looks to be too small to fit around both the upper edge of the welting and the body without grabbing it with a pair of (jaw-protected) pliers and bending it/spreading it open,..and then there is no guarantee it will fit properly. Now, I'm not usually one to alter parts, nor do I feel it should be necessary, so I really need the help of others here that have either run into this same problem, or, if someone knows of a good solution to my problem. Do I have the correct caps? It is still the correct one shown in their (huge) parts catalog.
Side note: I approached a sales person at the display of the company I purchased this stuff from at Carlisle and when I explained all of this to him, he had no idea of what to tell me as to why the welting would not fit and why it was smaller. He did however, take back the duplicated cap and i'm expecting the correct one shipped to me soon.
Any good advise would be immensely appreciated.
