I took my wiper transmission apart a year or so ago to clean all of the hardened grease out of it. It is without a doubt the most mechanically intricate part of the car. (Best I remember)When the wipers are "on" the motor just spins the shaft and the wipers go back and forth. When you shut the wipers off, there is a latching mechanism that drives the wipers to the park position. I'm not sure that calling it reverse is proper, however, that's the best way to describe it. The latching mechanism is an electrical solinoid with extremely fine wire. There are also several tiny springs and a couple of linkage bars which make this happen.
