    Stowage Well Repair

As I removed the half shafts on my '63 conv. for u joint repair, I noticed a 1.5 inch hole in the stowage well. This hole was obviously drilled in the well in order to remove bolts that hold the diff bracket in place. The hole had been poorly patched and caved in upon inspection. I now have this gaping hole that needs repaired correctly. Any direction here is appreciated. Thanks!

You will need to grind out the area and repair it with fiberglass mat and polyester resin, NOT cloth. You can buy color to add to the resin to try to match the original, rather than use the resin in it's clear state. There are several books on fiberglass repair available at the NCRS book store at this site that may provide some helpful info.

I had the same damage on my 66 and I am fortunate to be in contact with the original owner. He pleaded guilty to putting the hole in the well in 1968 to facilitate repairs on the drive train. Because he was an aeronautical engineer at Lockheed, He covered the hole with an aircraft aluminum plate and rivets. Anyway, Scott's previous comments are dead on correct as that is exactly the repair I had completed on my well. The repair is perfect. From the bottom you can see just natural dark resin complete with glass "hairs" and on top the well is painted same as the interior color as from the factory.
