    '66 427/390 belts

I have a '66 427/390 hp with ac and ps am trying to get the correct belt configuration. Is there a belt that runs only from the water pump to the harmonic balancer? If so, how do you get it tight? Is it supposed to have an idler pulley?

There is a belt. There is no idler pully. There has been an ongoing discussion on this topic from time to time. If you can get a correct sized belt that will be tight when installed, the easiest way to do it is to force the upper pully and the belt on together at the same time.

If you have an AIM, there is a page (G183 in the 67 manual) showing the various belt configurations...
      There are 4 belts on a '67 427/390 with a/c & ps. Ya, I know yours is a '66 but I don't have that book.......
      1.water pump to a/c
      2. Water pump and crankshaft to power steering.
      3. power steering to alternator
      4. crank shaft to waterpump.
There is NO idler on any belt. The various devices perform belt tightening. The belt between the crank and the water pump is sized for the application. You need to remove the fan/waterpump 3 groove pulley to get that belt on and then reassemble. Relative to the 3 groove pulley, the belt closest to the engine is belt #4. The center groove is belt #2. The groove closest to the fan is belt #1. Belt #3 should be on the forward groove of the power steering.
Did I just confuse you????? Hope not!

        Hi Chip,
Quanta can supply the small belt that runs between the crank pulley and Fan pulley, beware there are 2 different sizes. There is no idler you just install the pulleys with the belt around them

        Regards
        Myles

The first use of an idler pulley on a Corvette BIG BLOCK engine was 1968 with A/C.
