    1965 Corvette parking lights/headlights

Help, This problem is getting the best of me. When I turn my head light switch to the first notch for the parking lights to go on they work, but when I pull the switch to the next notch for the headlights the headlights go on and the parking lights go out. I replaced the switch and it worked for awhile then the same thing happen so I called Corvette Central where I ordered the switch from and they sent me another. I installed it and the same problem is still there. I have a wiring diagram and I cant find a thing wrong, has anyone else heard of this problem?

I don't remember the year when front parking lights started staying on when the headlights are on..... I believe it was in the mid 60's so your car may be of the "old" federal rules where the front parking lights were off when the headlights were on... My 67 lights stay on.... however the 67 cars got caught up in the Federal safety regs that said you can no longer sell "spinner" style hubcaps on cars which eliminated the "knock off" portion for the 67 wheel option. Somewhere along this same time frame seatbelts became mandatory on all cars......So maybe your headlite switch is ok.....

Do you want to sell one of the switches? I need one like that for my 66.

        Jim,

The front parking lights will go off when the switch is pulled to the second detent-headlights on. Taillights should remain on.

I believe it was 1968 when the change was made for the driving lights to remain illuminated while the headlights are on. However, it is not unusual to find various combinations on pre-68 cars. People either modified their headlight switches or used a replacement switch that met the older regs (driving lights stay illuminated).

For your '65, the driving lights should not be on when the headlights are on. If you have your car inspected, you may encounter a mechanic that is not aware of the old regs and wants to fail your car because the driving lights do not stay on.

            Jim,

That is exactly how they are supposed to work, same with 67's. Those lights are an EITHER / OR in operation.

Thats the way that they are supposed to work, but if you what them to work the other way, I can tell you how to wire it. Actually I think it looks nicer and is safer with them on.
