64 Brake - Spring and Adjuster Question

I'm going to service the brakes before Carlisle. I started to pull things apart this weekend and noticed something strange.

The spring at the bottom at the adjuster that holds the bottom of the shoes together is touching the adjuster wheel. It is against the wheel to the extent that the spring is slightly "bent" around the wheel.
I thought the spring should not contact the wheel and the wheel should operate freely to allow the automatic adjustment lever to rotate it.

Should the bottom spring be touching the adjuster?

My '64 is the same way. I assumed it was right and is why the start wheel doesn't turn so freely but clicks when being adjusted. Hope someoen else can confirm this.

Yes, the spring is supposed to interfere with the star wheel on the adjuster - keeps it from changing length all by itself and taking that wheel brake set out of adjustment. When you disassemble and clean everything, unscrew the adjuster assembly, clean it, lube it internally lightly so it operates freely, and reassemble.
