I am in the process of sorting out some strange noises coming from the rear axels of my '63 4 speed posi. I have replaced the drive shaft u joints and will be removing the half shafts for u joint inspection. Today I jacked the rear drivers side off the ground, brake off and in gear to see how much free play is in the diff. As I rock the tire back and forth, there is at least 1 inch of play in the diff. Same story on the other side. There is no visible slop in the half shaft u joints. Is this within normal limits or is a diff tear down in my immediate future ? Thanks Again.

Re: Differential Free Play
Thats not the best way to judge the backlash. You should hold the side axles and turn the pinion. You should just be able to detect a slight movement. There is a considerable amount of play in the clutches and the spider gears that will show up in the axles. With the rear out of the car the backlash is measured at the ring gear, but you cant really do this in the car. You didnt describe the noises but improper pinion adjustment tends to cause howl on acceleration or coast.- Top
