    Tach Cable Length?

I have an NOM 1960 c1, I ordered a 62-74' tach cable for my distributor,
when I recieved the cable it was about a foot short of the tach under the dash.
I exchanged the cable for a 58-60' reasoning that even though the motor is
not original the rest of the car is and the longer cable would fit.

When I got the cable it was about 1-2 feet too long, I figured that was
probably because that year cable ran to the generator up front. It works
for now but I have an inordinate amount of cable to deal with.

Is there a cable out there that will work for this situation? not too long
    and not too short???

    Scott-----

The use of a non-original engine in a C1 will not affect the tachometer cable length required. Regardless of engine (assuming that you haven't retrofitted something like a Ford engine or a Cadillac engine to the car), the position of the distributor or the generator can be and should be the same.

The original cable assembly for your car if it was originally an FI car with distributor tach drive (and the one that should fit now) was GM #1585653. This cable ASSEMBLY has a casing of 32-1/2" and an inner shaft of 33-5/8".

If your car was other than the above, it originally had a generator tach drive. In that case, the cable assembly was of GM #1588291. That cable ASSEMBLY had a casing length of 60-1/16" and an inner shaft length of 61-3/16"

If your car did not originally have a distributor tach drive but you CONVERT to a distributor tach drive, then you should be able to use the 1585653 cable assembly. However, I believe that different tachometers are used for generator versis distributor tach drive.

Unfortunately, both of tha above-referenced cable assemblies are GM discontinued. A generator tach drive cable replacement of 68" length is available under GM #25032275. There is no GM replacement for the shorter cable assembly and I don't know if they are available in reproduction, or not.

      Re: Tach Cable Length?

      Scott,
You may want to try to get your long cable shortened at a speedo repair shop or someplace similiar that makes cables. Do an internet search for a supplier/manu. The problem you are experiencing is probably due to the differences in the tach/firewall/engine distance/location between 60 and 62
If these are the same then the cable routing must have been different in 62 and you may need to drill a new hole in the firewall. My 67 cable enters the vehicle adjacent to the distributor. I assume the 60 style going to the generator enters the vehicle near the steering column......
