I'm dropping a new GM 350 crate engine into my '62 327/340hp and the GM parts person recommended an 8" (approx.) harmonic balancer on the crank. How crucial is the single belt pulley that mounts on this to be the same diameter? Thanks for everyones help, I truly appreciate the feedbacks and expertise! Don

If you mean how critical is it that the crankshaft pulley be the same diameter as the harmonic balancer, it's not critical, at all. The crankshaft pulley can be whatever diameter that is required and is, basically, independent of the harmonic balancer size.
One thing, though: your 62 327/340 should have an 8" diameter balancer on it. You can't use this, particular, balancer on your crate engine, but it is the same diameter and thickness as the one that you should be using on your crate engine. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Crank/balancer single pulley adapter.
Joe,
Thanks for the information and your expertise. I truly appreciate you taking the time and effort to assist me in what I'm sure is a simple question. Thanks again. Oh, I was informed from GM Goodwrench personnel regarding the original balancer and not to use it. They were very helpful with the crate engine. All I'm doing is using the crate as a "driver" engine so when my 327/340 is completed, I can leave it on a "display" stand so I can restore it totally correct and take my time. Again, thanks Joe.- Top
