re: Forged crankshaft for 283 engine posted 7/3/02

For Your Information - My orignal post was on the subject of how to identify a forged crankshaft without removing the pan - I bought the engine, it is a totally stock 1964 283 with the pac-man pattern on the flywheel flange. When I removed the pan, I found a cast crank installed. This engine was never disassembled - the date codes on the engine, heads and crank are all within a week of each other. John.

That is a new one for me. Never seen a cast 283 crank with a single notch flange. Maybe someone else out there has seen one before?

      John-----

The thing that really surprises me about this is that I don't think that any cast crankshafts were used in 283 CID engines prior to 1965. The vast majority of 283 crankshafts were forged steel. What is the casting number on this crankshaft?

          John-----

The GM #3849847 crankshaft was produced in BOTH cast iron and forged versions. This sort of situation is very unusual for crankshafts. Usually, the number found on the crank is specific as to a forging or a casting. I thought that most of the pre-65 versions of this crankshaft were forged and the 65+ versions cast. But, apparently, some pre-65 versions were cast, too.

I can't find any reference to an "XF" suffix code for a 283. However, most "X" character suffix codes of the period were used in trucks. That's also consistent with your block and cylinder head castings. So, I expect that your 283 was originally installed in a truck of some sort.

As far as the crankshaft goes, don't automatically reject a cast crankshaft. These crankshafts were manufactured of cast NODULAR iron. This is a form of cast iron that is much stronger than the gray iron used for cylinder blocks and cylinder heads. As a matter of fact, the 2002-03 405hp ZO-6 uses a cast nodular iron crankshaft.

              late model cast cranks

the weak point with cast cranks is the radius in the journals and all the late model cranks use "rolled radius fillet" where the use very high pressure on a wheel to induce the radius into the journals which add strength to the cranks. i have used cast cranks in my cavalier 2 litre 4 cly race engines and turned them to 7500+ RPM and even after a oil flow problem cause a billet rod to break the crank was still in one piece, junk but still in one piece.
