car cover when transporting a car?

OK, here is a dumb question that I am sure has an easy yes or no answer. I am going to trailer my 56, in an open trailer, 400 miles to Monterey this Friday. Should I put a cover on it or not for the trip? I would like to protect it while on the trailer, on the road. I am not sure if the cloth cover flapping on the paint for 400 miles will do any harm.

    thanks

What about something like the saran wrap type covering you see on New cars that are transported by truck?

I don't know what it is, but someone else here probably does. A dealer might also.

      Just a thought.

I towed a car on an open trailer 700 miles once and would never do it again. I would either drive it the 400 mile trip or find an enclosed trailer. The amount of debris that hits your car on an open trailer from the tow vehicle as well as others with the wind turbulence back there can do more damage than just driving it. I have had good results using a quality fitting bra for long trips as long as the car is clean and dry to start with. Good luck and enjoy your adventure.

An open trailer with a stone guard on the front acts like a large bug shield for debris. Anything that hits it flies over or around the trailered vehicle. Had my car towed about 120 miles and there wasn't so much as a bug on the windshield. You could probably have one made out of 1/8" diamond plate relatively quick and fairly inexpensive at a local fab shop and bolt it to your trailer.

In answer to the original question, yes it will damage the paint. Dirt will fly up under the cover and the flapping will sand the debris into the finish. Nasty!
