    Possible reasons for no #'s

My 81 4 speed has no stamped #'s AT ALL! Why? It has all the correct casting #'s but no stamped #'s anywhere.

If the transmisson would have been replaced completely at the dealership, say for warranty work, what would we expect any stamped #'s to say?

    Thanks

    Numbers missing!

Is there evidence of the numbers having been there and having been removed?

One reason that there may be no #'s on the block is that the block may have been decked in the past. But I don't know about the other components.

    Good luck!

    Mike

      Re: Numbers missing!

Are you sure? The stamp pad on an 81 is very hard to see(below the AIR unit)It may be there and dirty so it looks like there are no numbers (there also may be blue paint on the pad.). View the pad from directly above it through a small area only. Put a cloth wrapped stick down the hole area and clean the pad off (thinner works best).

I'm talking about the Transmission. It shows no sign of ever having been stamped. The stamp pad is BLANK!

So I wonder if it could have been replaced as a warranty unit at the dealer.

This car has not been messed with at all! ALL numbers match. Alt. carb dis. engine. rear end. And then there's the no number T10????????

          Re: Numbers missing!

My '76 Cosworth Vega doesn't have a VIN derivative on the transmission either because the original seized up at 7K miles while I was cruising down the San Diego Freeway. The entire transmission was replaced on warranty. It has all the "correct" other numbers including the castings and tag, but the pad for the VIN derivative is blank.

So if your transmission appears to have all the correct data except for the final assembly plant stamped VIN derivative, I'd be willing to wager that it is a warranty replacement.

In NCRS judging, it will not cost you any points because Dr. Patrick Hulst is the only NCRS guy who is skinny enough to slide under the car and see the numbers.

I've been able to slide under there in the right circumstances, but it sure ain't due to my size! At 6 feet and 215-220, though, I can still be smaller than some of my judging peers. I just don't care on occasion if my shirt gets dirty.

You ought to see Mike McCagh (who IS rather small) slide under these cars while judging. You can't hide anything from him.

              I was in awe!

When I took my '65 BB, piper car to Bloomington and watched 'Sam da Snake' (names withheld to protect the innocent) singgle, wiggle and slither underneath to check my tranny numbers! When he managed to extracate himself, there was a broad grin on his face. The Muncie assy wack has a 'wierd' punch on it that I'd not heard mentioned before--a rectangular box around a VERY small '3'. Sam da Snake, was grinning as he muttered not having seen many untouched THIRD SHIFT tranny cases from that era before. I guess 'Sam' was not only articulate at 'slithering' but he could read in the dark and knew his stuff to boot!

                Re: I was in awe!

In any event, transmission numbers aren't an issue in Flight Judging - just correct configuration/appearance. Bowtie is a different animal.

You have a Super T-10, and its B-W build date code should be stamped vertically on the machined surface directly aft of the rear edge of the side cover, with the VIN derivative stamped adjacent to it. I would think that a "missed" B-W build date stamp and a "missed" assembly plant VIN derivative stamp on the same orignal transmission is quite unlikely, but anything is "possible".

If this transmission was a warranty/dealer replacement would there be any #'s stamped in the date/vin location?

I am wondering why nobody has mentioned the "CT" Chevrolet Transmission stamp number that is stamped into all service/warranty transmission assemblies? I thought that this tranny should have that number regardless of how it got there. Someone please fill me in.
