I have a dual quad 245 hp 1961. Should the exhaust system have a header crossover pipe? I was looking in some catalogs and there listings are not too clear. It list low performance, all 1x4 carbs. Would mine be considered a low performance? Are the glass packs a consideration? Thanks for your help, Joe DeLuca

Re: 1961 exhaust
a 245 Hp set-up is with hydraulic lifters. If you define "high performance" as higher RPM defining a torque peak higher up in the power band then your's is a low performance engine. I would rather have a "low performance" engine any day for street use up to speeds of 120 mph.
Glass packs were never used in production nor was a round muffler in 1961 production. You need the 411 & 412 GM NOS oval mufflers with the front extensions welded on. The mufflers were aluminized but all the pipes were of high carbon steel.
Every trick in the book was used with solid lifter engines to broaden the power band. A cross-over pipe formed a plenum on the exhaust side which sacrifices some top end torque but lowers the rpm where usable torque can be extended.
Your 1961 245 hp was built without a cross-over.
