I have the incorrect gas cap on my '64. I've looked at the aftermarket sources and GM parts direct. The cap from GM, part number 3952708 is listed at 1/2 the price of the other vendors. Is this cap (vented style) correct for NCRS standards? If not then any suggestions? Thanks Blake

As far as I know, the only difference between the GM #3952708 fuel cap and the one originally used on your car, GM #3843576, is the type of material used for the sealing gasket. The original cap used a brown, fiber-type gasket; the 3952708 uses a neoprene gasket. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Mid-Year Fuel Cap; differences
Gary, If your asking me I really can't say for sure. I've ordered a cap from GM PartsDirect so we'll see if I need to keep searching for an original or not. My immediate problem was that the car had a sealed cap on it; apparently from some later vintage car. I was told that this could cause problems , although I've been driving the car for over a year now without any obvious problems to my knowledge. So at this point since I need a cap I might as well get the right one. Blake- Top

Re: Mid Year Fuel Cap
Differences deal with time of construction and obscure changes in configuration.
(1) What is surface plating technology of existing GM service replacement vs. factory production original pieces?
(2) What is/was Stant Manufacturing's corporate logo then (SM surrounded by C all enclosed in a circle) vs. now (a block 'S') that's embossed on the bottom.
(3) Then, there's the gasket issue Joe speaks to. Service replacements use a black rubber outer gasket while originals used a layered composite die cut fibre material that some catalog houses call 'paper' and supply 'correct' reproductions made literally from die cut brown paper based stock vs. the original layered fibre.
(4) Last, there's the issue of early vs. late caps. Most '63 Corvettes need the first design cap that had a TINY vent hole with NO pressure valve built into the cap and its associated 'nub' of a pop rivet protruding through the underside of the cap's vent hole. The valve allowed air motion in one direction through the cap to curtail migration of atmospheric bore dust/dirt....
Expect to give upwards of $100 for a correct/original, first design, '63-only Corvette gas cap IF and when you can find one!- Top
