    M-22 Italian Gearset

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the Italian-made gears for the Muncie M-22 transmission? Any recommendation for any other alternatives since original GM gears are virtually imposible to find?

    Thanks, Rex #8089

    Rex------

I've never used them (and likely will never need to since I have my own supply of M-22 NOS gears/parts [none for sale] that will likely last me several lifetimes). However, if I needed to, I would have EVERY confidence in the quality of these gears. They may even be better than the originals. Their manufacturer is one of the largest manufacturers of gears in the world. In any event, other than used or NOS, there is no other alternative.

I'm curious to know more about this "Italian Gearset". Who makes it? (I assume the plant is in Italy.)

      Are they the same ratios - 2.20, 1.64, 1.28, and 1.00:1?

        Duke----

Muncie internal parts, including gears, synchro assemblies, and shafts, are manufactured by Masiero Gear of Italy. Most, if not all, gears/synchros/shafts for 66-74 Muncie M-20, M-21, and M-22 are available and are exact reproductions of the original parts. The alloys used to make the gears are a bit different, but, are, essentially, as strong and durable (perhaps more durable) as the originals. Some 63-65 Muncie parts may also be available; I'm not certain of this. These gears/parts are VERY high quality; I would use them without hesitation.

Bearings are available from Delco, BCA, and others. Small parts are available from GM, Autodyne and others. Most front retainers are available from GM and aftermarket sources.

Auto Gear of New York makes replacement main cases for all 63-74 Muncies. The cases are NOT intended to be an exact reproduction of the originals and are configured somewhat differently. However, they are significantly stronger and their up-dated design eliminates many of the "weak points" of the original Muncie main cases. It is a SUPERB piece that I would use in an instant for any street driven car.

Auto Gear also makes a cast nodular iron rear bearing retainer plate for 63-74 Muncies. This bearing retainer plate eliminates the "weak points", many of which are totally misunderstood, of the original Muncie aluminum bearing retainer plates. It is difficult to discern when installed in any Muncie transmission (especially if the exposed edges are painted with dull aluminum paint) and it is FAR stronger than the original piece. This design is similar to the nodular iron plates used in many later Super T-10 transmissions.

About the only Muncie parts not currently available in reproduction/replacement are the extension housings and side covers. Otherwise, one can build a brand new, high quality Muncie transmission, at least as good as the originals, from available NEW parts.

Masiero SA also produces internal gearing for aircraft applications fitted to both UK and US aircraft engine types.(Rolls-Royce,GE,Pratt Whitney)
This particular to main and angle gearboxes of Airbus A340,A330 variants.

Sounds as if the Italian gears would be OK. Any recommendations as to where to purchase them? Thanks, Rex
