    Seat Belt Retainer Quandry

Question - How does one install the retainer for a shoulder/lap belt? By the retainer, I mean the plastic thingy that fits over the belt and holds it in place so it doesn't slip through the seat. I am getting ready to put the new belts in on the new seats....

I have looked at this a bunch of times and can't seem to negotiate how to put these buggers on. Heat? Boil them? Whatever it is, looks to be "challenging" at best! Moreover, once you get them on, can you ever get them off to remove the seats?

    Thanks in advance -

Pat, I can't help you with putting the plastic or rubber grommet on the belt itself but I can help with getting it through the hole in the seat itself. When I bought my 70 the original owner had removed the shoulder belt so he didn't have to put up with the nuisance they cause when you tilt the backrest foward. I simply and carefully pushed/squeezed the rubber grommet through the hole in the seat. A plastic screwdriver helped to push when needed. It took some time and patience but it did go through. No special tricks were learned.

Fish a wire through the hole in the seat back. Tie the wire through the large hole in the shoulder belt clasp. Slowly draw the belt through the opening in the seat back by pulling on the wire and guiding the belt through with your other hand.

Push the plastic retainer on as far as it will go, but without forcing. Using a hairdrier on High setting or a heat gun, heat the retainer evenly on both sides. Stop occasionally to see if the material is soft enough to allow you to push the retainer on the rest of the way.

        Remove the wire. Drink beer.

To remove the retainer, just heat again. Then drink beer.
