    IR thermometer

How is engine operating temp measured with an IR thermometer ? That is, where do you aim; at the block, manifolds, at the coolant in the surge tank ?

I found one in the Eastwood catalog for $99 . Is this typical ?

the more the cost of the IR temp sensor the small the spot it reads, also the accuracy of the temp is better. the better one even have a laser beam pointer so you know what spot you are reading.the $99 will work fine.

        PS

check the temp of the rad from top to bottom, hotter at the top that at the bottom tells that the rad is working.

I measure the temp at the water outlet thermostat cap, the outlet water hose and the inlet to the radiator. The number is the same at all three locations. These points measure the water as soon as it leaves the engine block. Measuring temp's across the radiator allows you to tell if the radiator is working properly; no plugs. I used these measurements to calibrate my water temp gage.

Go to Tooldesk.com and check the Raytek MT 4 Mini Temp unit. Lists for approx $110 and on sale for $76.95. Has laser sighting. You can compare by going to Raytek's web page. Got mine last week. Using it to check hydraulic pump system over heating.

                    It's a terrific tool - a Corvette temp sender's worst enemy!
