I'm replacing the rag joint on my L79 67' after rebuilding the steering box! Does the lower portion of the rag joint have to go onto the worm gear shaft a certain way relative to the flat spot on the shaft or can it mount any way after I have got the wheels and steering wheel straight? Id appreciate any help!! Mike Arteaga #34566

The worm shaft on a 1967 Corvette steering gear box did not have a "flat spot" on the splines. If your does, then the steering box must have been changed to a 70+ type or, at least, the worm shaft/nut assembly was changed to the 70+ style.
If your steering box has a "flat spot" on the splines, then you have to use the 70-82 steering coupler, GM #7818568. If your steering box doesn't have the "flat spot" on the worm shaft, then you have the 67-69 style shaft and require the 67-69 coupler, GM #7806391. The two couplers are NOT interchangeable with respect to which worm shaft that they will fit on.
Regardless of which coupler you use, you need to have the front wheels aligned in the straight-ahead position and the steering gear at "mid-point" when you attach the steering shaft. However, the coupler with the "flat spot" will cause the steering to be perfectly aligned as long as the wheels and the steering gear are close to where they need to be. With the 67-69 style, you can get it assembled "off center". That's why GM went to the flat spot on the shaft. I strongly recommend following the procedure found in the Chevrolet Service Manual. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
