    63 Headlight Housings

It is my understanding that 63 Headlight Housings were made out of fiberglass (???) and were a one year (or shorter) issue??? I think I've stumbled onto a pair and would like to sell them, but I need to know a little bit more of the story so as not to mislead anyone. Also, if anyone would like to take a shot at their approximate value (Used - Good Condition) it would be most appreciated.

Thanks in Advance for Any Assistance...

    Rick------

The 1963-only headlight housings were, indeed, constructed of fiberglass material. 1964-67 were fabricated steel. I have no idea, whatsoever, regarding the value in the market-place of a used set of these housings.

        Re: 63 Headlight Housings

All the '63 headlight housings I've seen have had fiberglass skins with steel ends and innards.

It is difficult to find a matched pair for sale that have not been hit or damaged by rust. There were at least two versions of the metal inner brackets, mounts, and outer bezels. Often the welded pivot shafts on the end plates are bent or twisted.

Fiberglass housings with only the glued-in end plates and brackets have been bid up to about $350 a pair on eBay. I do not know if these transactions ended happily. There weren't many bidders at that level, and some of those housings looked damaged in the photos. It would take a very nice pair of empty housings to bring that much at swap meet.

If you will send me some photos of what you have, I will be glad to tell you what I would ask for them.

The 64-67s are made of aluminium. There are severial different variations of the 63 fiberglass, with the earlier ones having the screws for the bezels on the face of the bezel as opposed to the outer edge. The interesting thing is that they are not that difficult to find at swap meets etc. as they are in less demand. 64-67s buckets are made as repros but original sets are harder to find now. It used to be the other way around, so dont get too exuberant with your pricing.

                        Wayne,

Are you sure about the 64-67s being aluminum? I received two NOS ones with my car when I bought it. I think they're pot metal or 'white metal' castings, not aluminum. as I recall from installing them, they were way too heavy for being aluminum or aluminum alloy.
