I was asked to make a recommendation on replacement bumpers for a 74. The car is being made into a nice DRIVER and the owner never heard of NCRS. I suggested the "Tru-Flex" fiberglass replacements vs urethane. Any comments? BTW, cost is a consideration, as well as appearance/durability.

Re: 74 bumpers
Ed, I replaced the rear split bumper on our '74 convertible several years ago. The car was an original, NCRS quality car but it was my wife's around town driver. Because the car was so nice, I bought original NOS GM bumpers and paid $700 at the time. If I had it to do over again, I would have bought fiberglass replacements which would have cost half that amount. The urethane are fragile and will become brittle over time and eventually require replacing again. The fiberglass are a one-time deal and in my opinion, they look better.

Re: 74 bumpers
Ed, I too will eventually need bumpers for my '74 in time. I put TrueFlex front and rear bumpers on my '75 last winter and they are OK, not great, but OK for a driver. Had to do a fair amount of modification to the rear to accept the bumper, front was'nt as bad. One negative thing about the '74 rear TrueFlex is it's one piece and the "split" is "saw-cut". Not looking like the original if that matters to you. From all the discussions I've had with many people on this subject, the Eckler's fiberglass seems to be the "best all around" fit and has the "correct OEM" look. Also, a '73-'74 TrueFlex front is slightly narrow in between the vertical pieces and WILL NOT accept the "center grille". Had also heard Eckler's bought "the original" urethane molds from GM so it makes sense their's may be the best fitting. Also, the last true OEM urethane '74 bumper I saw on eBay was over $2400 dollars!!! I will go with the Eckler's ones for my '74 when the time comes.- Top
