C3 1968 dash mounted ignition

The spring that brings the key back to the run position has gone south ie if I start the car and let go of the key the starter continues to turn. Never having had one apart is it serviceable? I was trying to avoid replacement and having to rekey to match the doors etc.

These switches were not designed to be serviced except as a complete assembly. However, I think that they can be repaired if one is careful and innovative. You won't be able to purchase any internal parts to repair them, but you can cannabilize parts from another "sacrificial" switch or use fabricated/standard parts from a hardware store.

If your attempts to repair the switch fail or fail to produce a satisfactory repair, then you've lost very little. In that case, you resort to "Plan B" and use a new switch. A locksmith can code the cylinder to match the other locks without too much trouble or expense.

Jim, the same process Described in my Restorer article regarding C-1 switch repair can be used on your '68, just a matter of obtaining a donor NOS part with the same electrical pinout configuration.

James I have seen NOS 6 ignition switches in the NCRS Driveline in the past 6 months that are reasonably priced.

My recollection of changing out the igniton switch in my 68 is that I changed the switch and retained the lock cylinder portion, which was a separate part. I bought the new switch at an auto parts store. Larry
