    57 fly wheel/starter

    I have a 57 base HP 3 speed car that I have just finished and am having problems, my starter gear gets jamed on the flywheel. I remember two ring gears from the old days. What tooth count is correct?
    thanks
    Ronnie

    All 56-61 C1s, manual or automatic transmission, use a 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate ring gear.

        That is what we have, any ideas on why we are sticking? I have two starters that are the correct part number for the C1 and both get stuck. I can take a screw driver and pry it out but it will not come back on it's own.
        thanks

            Ronald------

            Two possibilities:

            1) The starter needs to be seriously shimmed to establish the correct orientation of starter to flywheel;

            2) The starter drive is incorrect or defective. Incorrect or worn drive mechanisms can exist on a starter with correct "numbers";

            Given that you have tried 2 different starters and for other reasons, I suspect that (1) is the problem.

                We have a 3 bolt starter that bolts to the bell housing, it is a #1107664. We will try to add some shims to move the starter back from where it is now. I wanted to make sure we didn't have some weird ring gear on our flywheel.
                thanks again

                    Ronald,
                    Be careful adding shims. This may not be the solution to your problem. Suggest you take some measurements where the ring gear is in relationship to the bellhousing hole face AND how far the Bendix gear will go out. This is to make sure you have full Bendix engagement into the flywheel gear. You need full engagement into the flywheel gear. If you don't have it, the flywheel teeth will become chipped and the Bendix will disengage as the engine is trying to start but not quite caught. Eventually all gears will all jam together. Don't ask me how I know about less than full engagement ;-) ! Although it wasn't on a Chevy but a Studebaker. Hope this helps.

                        It almost sounds like the return spring is not in between the starter housing and solenoid.
