    1979 rear differential

When I go to put my car in reverse it makes a clunk noise what could cause that and what can be done to fix the problem.

    Thanks

Depending on when it is happening ie when you are transitioning from reverse to forward I had a broken engine mount, but I'm sure there are many other reasons outside of the differential like u-joints etc.

Check the condition of the rubber 'cushion' at the front of the differential carrier. If it's loose or badly worn, it could be the source of the 'clunk' sound (and bump you can feel) when you shift into reverse. These are readily available and not too expensive.

Make sure it's not the transmisson mout. When they break they make a clunking noise when you first put it in drive and a bigger noise when you put in in reverse. To find out put in in gear with one foot on the brake and rev the engine in bursts and it will clunk if it is broken. Or just get under it and look.

Take a look at your 1/2 shafts u joints, my 80' blows them out all the time.
