My 72 power steering control valve is rebuilt (and leak free), new hoses have been installed at all four places and the valve balanced with the GM procedure. Now comes the glitch and the question. The steering actually feels lighter (perhaps even TOO light for my tastes) than before and is QUITE sensitive when making a minor correction to the right. It is almost too sensitive as if it wanted to jump to the right, but is easliy controlled. In straight ahead driving, it feels normal until I try to make a minor lane adjustment. Can I assume perhaps that the control valve needs to be re-balanced? Is it possible that there might still be air in the pump after about 5-7 miles of driving and sittiing for three days? I can't actually see down into the pump because the alternator adjusting bracket is in the way. In addition, I have to use a long screw driver to use as a dip stick for the reservoir since the same bracket keeps me from removing the cap completely. The cap can be loosened and moved to the side and not totally removed. This was a point of discussion and a number of guys responded that they had the same problem. Once the control valve has been rebuilt, I can't imagine any other adjustments to the valve other than the balancing. Is there anything internally that can be done to tighten up the steering? Should I just rebalance the control valve and live with the feel? Any ideas here are appreciated. Btw, I am getting ready for a 400 drive from Pittsburgh to Asheville to attend the Regional meet there and this car is going to be driven there. I must get this figured out.
