What is the difference in a Top Flight Award and a Bloomington Gold Certificate? Are the standards the same and is there any advantage on trying for a Bloomington Gold after a Top Flight has been achieved? Thanks.....just curious...

The judging is different. The individual judges have 30 minutes for your car at Bloomington. There is no operations test either. There is more emphisis on originality vs restored cars. No judging manual.Cost high!
At NCRS there is alot more time spent on your car per judging team plus operations, PV awards etc. MUCH cheaper also. Some awards at certain levels can lead to other awards ie; Duntov etc.

Bloomington = Money = Bloomington. Pay your money and get your award, no questions asked. ( can't afford to upset the owners as they might not return to spend more money ). A bit of sarcism I admit but not far from the truth. No question a regional or national top flight is far superior to "GOLD" award. Survivor can't hold a candle to NCRS BOWTIE judging. IT SHOULD BE
"Take The Money" versus "Take No Prisoners", but it's not always true. My favorite thing at Bloomington/Springfield/St Charles is to go where the 200_ are being judged and watch the "TERROR" in the eyes of those being judged - what could Bowling Green have done wrong on this 158 day old car? The other funny thing is the Judge and his Clipboard doing these classes, huffing and puffing around like he has something to look at. Next time you're there, ask him how long it takes him to check for blown fuses..........- Top

Thanks for the responses. I hope to Top Flight my '57 in Asheville next week and wondered if it would be worth the trip from Florida to Chicago to try for the Gold. Sounds like if I get the Top Flight, I should save my money on the trip.....- Top

Not always. I know of three friends who got National Top Flight awards for their cars at the same National meet a few years back, and the following June all 3 got Silver awards at Bloomington. It was a real eye-opener for me.

Disagree....
Did all three circuits with my '65 (NCRS, Mark of Excellence; NCCB, Gold Certification; Chevy/Vettefest, Gold Spinner/Triple Crown).... I can truthfully tell you I enjoyed (got my money's worth) all three of these Corvette factory concours campaign circuits AND I learned new things to address on my car from each event eventhough I did NCRS FIRST....
Some in this thread have 'put down' the boys at Bloomington as profit hungry fellas. I disagree. Eventhough I had disagreements with the judge's calls on my car (had to exercise right of appeal twice to their judging chairman, Keith Majeur), I was listened to, my point(s) were taken into consideration and scoring was CHANGED in my favor upon reflection....
I even had the dubious distinction of being an NCCB 'first' -- the only car to be granted BOTH a Silver Certificate and a Gold Certificate on the same day! Tabulations made an error and when I drove through the awards tent, TV cameras blazing away, the Zora-Arkus Duntov Mark of Excellence plate on the front of my car filling the lens, Ken Burroughs shook my hand and gave me a Silver Certificate.
Later, I'd look over the paperwork, find the tabulations error(s) and return to address another 'problem'. They IMMEDIATELY re-did my award, STOPPED the awards ceremony and publically announced the error. Burroughs and the NCCB staff made a public apology and did more than give equal time in the retraction.
Bottom line, I was treated GREAT! I recommend going to the other Corvette factory concours circuits to any/all NCRS members.... BUT, the 'competition' is essentially by-invitation or by-raffle and they rarely, if ever, judge the same car twice. So, make NCRS your first stop, because we encourage you to come as many times as you want and our objective is to HELP YOU EARN YOUR AWARD.- Top

Operations check at Bloomington Gold *TL*
is called Tech, and it is alive and well in Certification. Bob, you may have been thinking of Gold Spinner/Triple Crown where there is no operations check because the judging is done indoors where it is mandatory that the battery be disconnected.
