I need to know the correct harmonic balancer for a 327/375 hp fuel injection engine, is it the one with the cooling fins? The number on the pad is 5114119 F03T0HG, the T could be an I, the number runs off of the pad. The engine is out of a 1965 Corvette convertible with fuel injection emblems on the fenders. Does the harmonic balancer have a part number on it?

The correct part number for the harmonic balancer for your application is GM #3817173. This is an 8" OD balancer. The original version of this balancer had reinforcing ribs on the inner portion of the balancer hub. Often, these are referred to as "cooling fins", but they were not intended for that function. Also, most original examples of this balancer have the part number cast/embossed on the face of the balancer hub section. I don't know if all did, though.
The GM #3817173 balancer is still available from GM under the original part number. However, the versions that have been sold for the past 20 years, or so, do not have the reinforcing ribs and usually do not have the part number embossed on the balancer hub. Although not "correct", they are fully functional and, except for the ribs (which are difficult to see) will appear just like an original balancer. The part number embossed on originals cannot be seen when the pulley is mounted on the balancer so its presence or absence is relatively moot.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Ray - if you really want the style with teh reinforcement ribs as Joe mentions, Goat Hill Classics...the pulley guy, has a reproduction item with very high quality. I bought one at Carlisle a couple years ago from him, and it is a very nice piece. I believe the originals can also be rebuilt somewhere, but, so many I have seen at shows have been "beat on" with hammers instead of pulled on with the correct tool. And, I don't trust the 35 year old bonding and rubber condition on this part, at least if you want to drive the car. Personally, I felt that this was an area where you spend the $300 if you want the original look, and want reliability and safety. Or, as Joe suggests, get the current GM unit and feel comforatble driving the car hard if you wish...Craig- Top
