I started the 56 for the first time this morning. There's nothing like the gentle roll of the solid lifters and the sound of the exhaust to make all the headaches worthwhile. Speaking of headaches, I found a hairline crack in the aluminum intake. The crack is in the front coolant crossover on the passenger's side. Given that I would like to take the car to Bloomington, is welding a possible repair? Can a weld be ground down to "disappear"? The manifold is nice, other than the crack, but I think manifolds are around for a reasonable price. If anyone has had experience with cracked intakes, I would appreciate some advice. Steve

Try Jerry MacNeish at the link below - in addition to "re-skinning", he does incredible aluminum welding and repairs - some examples are on his website.

If I could, I'd go into business Actually, it's a "tumbling" process using proprietary media and chemicals that cleans the surface and allows the natural as-cast surface to oxidize again without destroying the surface texture. That's about all I know about it - the folks who do it aren't anxious to "share" the details of the process, for obvious reasons.- Top
