1960 Turn signal switch/horn assembly order?

    Hello everyone,

I recently got my steering wheel for my 1960 back from Garys Wheel Restoration (who did a GREAT job!!). Now five months after I took the wheel off, I'm trying to figure out how to get the turn signal/horn/wheel back together. I think that I have the turn signal assembly in correctly, but I'm not sure how the wheel goes back on with respect to the two roll pins that are on the back of the wheel. Also, I assume that the horn switch just drops in the hole in the wheel with the small spring loaded brass piece down and the bottom of the switch running against the brass ring on top of the column. I know that I am making a lot of assumptions on the assembly, so I will not be offended by any corrections anyone makes. Any help on this and other horn assembly suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Jason

    Jason,

Joe Lucia pointed me towards the website www.docrebuild.com You can go to the online parts catalogue under S for steering wheel and you will find a detailed exploded view. The website for your car is http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/ST-COL1.PDF Hope this helps.

I just finished rebuilding my turn signal mechanism in my '57. The steering wheel must be installed so that the two pins on the inside hub of the steering wheel are vertical when the steering wheel is aligned properly when the car is going straight ahead. If not, the cancelling mechanism will not work properly. There is an adjustment on the upper steering arm (at least on '57s) that adjusts this. I replaced the cancelling mechanism just for good measure and that part is available from Corvette Central among other places.

There is a back issue (I think it's vol. 15, issue 4 but don't hold me to that) of the Restorer that has a piece about rebuilding the turn signal system complete with photos.

The horn works as you described.

HTH. If you have any questions, Email me.

The plastic insert drops in the hole first (10 o'clock position), followed by the horn contact switch/wire/spring. The steering wheel goes back on the shaft so the two roll pins are on the right side of the shaft. These pins make contact with the turn signal canceling cam to cancel the turn signal and bring the turn signal handle and switch back to the neutral position. If you put the steering wheel back on correctly, one of the steering wheel spokes will be straight up if the wheels are turned straight ahead. Then the two cancelling pins are in the best position. Finally, place the horn button holder back on with the 3 screws and lock washers. The way you can tell if you have that piece back in the proper position is if the elongate metal piece facing the cancelling switch holds the horn contact switch in place (pushes against the small spring).

Joe, your post seems right on the money. However, every C1 that I have replaced the wheel on has had the two roll pins on the LEFT side. I assumed that was correct, since they all worked perfectly. Also seems to me that the horn contact should be at the 2 o'clock position. All this is viewed from the driver's seat. Perhaps there is more than one way to assemble that will work. There are some pretty good pictures in the ST 12 if I recall. I am on the road and have no reference material,so I'm going on memory.
