    65 emblems

I am in the process of replacing the front and side emblems on my 65 big block. I am wondering about the correct color of the left flag. The judging manual says orange- red. Is it orange or red. The emblems on the car now are much more red than orange. The repros I just bought are much more orange. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: 65 emblems

    Fred,

I believe the earlier emblems (probably up to some time in '65 or maybe even for the whole year) were a more orange-red, while later ones were a deeper colour of red. Some suppliers of repro emblems (sorry, I can't remember who, but it could be Paragon or maybe even Ecklers)actually list the two versions separately. My original '65 emblems were definitely of the orange-red variety.

        Fred:

The emblems for your 1965 should be red, but more "orangey red" than the deeper red 1966 emblems. Be sure to cut the rear stud off of the right side emblem for heater box clearance. This is very difficult to access with the heater box installed. You might have to glue the rear "stub" in place, and use the correct speed nut on the forward stud.

            Tiny hands....

help to make the rear stud cut on the emblem once it's installed and the speed nut torqued down. My 396 was done AFTER the firewall heater components were installed and, while a chore, I can tell you it IS possible to get the speed nut on and make the stud cut without having to resort to funky glue....

                Jack,

I did mine with the heater/blower installed, and simply cut the stud a little short before installing the emblem. A good estimate of how short you could cut it can be gotten by looking at the driver's side emblem to see how much of the stud is exposed. To ensure that the speed nut will start reasonably easily on the shortened stud, install it and remove it from the stud prior to installing the emblem. This will 'cut' the grooves in the stud. Good luck!

My orig. 65 bb emblems still had all there studs . the later 396 emblems were made by General of Detroit with a part #on the back, and have a shiny turbo jet face .the ones off 17346 have a brushed or satin face and have bSc logo on the back side without a part #. Bill
