    Crankshaft Pulley Quandry

    Hi guys --

It just won't end.... So now I have this new motor for the 73 but the crank pulley from the 400 shaft/balancer won't seat correctly on a stock 73 balancer. I have a pulley set-up from a 76 Vette motor which does seat correctly. I don't know if it is original to the motor. This however, does not jive with what all the parts houses are telling me. They tell me the stock pulley for a 76 has 2 grooves and there is a PS add-on pulley. This one has 3 grooves looks right, but I am unsure what this pulley fits.

I laid both pulleys together -- the grooves line up, but there is probably another inch or so on the back end. Of course, the balancers are very different. So I am wondering if this pup will work.

Will this pulley work on a 73 w/AC and PS? Or should I purchase a new pulley for a 68-73 car?

    Thanks in advance -

    Pat

The parts guys are advising you correctly. All 1973-80 Corvettes with small block used crank pulley GM #3858533. This is a 2 groove pulley of 6-5/8" diameter. For 1973-74 Corvettes, the power steering pump was driven by a single-groove, "add-on" pulley of GM #3751232. Both of these pullies are still available from GM for a current list price of $34.58 and 33.53, respectively.

By the way, the 76 also used an add-on pulley for the power steering pump. However, this pulley was different than the 73-74 pulley and was of GM #346290. I am not aware of any Corvette, big block or small block, that ever used a 3 groove crankshaft pulley, although it's possible that a few A/C-equipped configurations did.

        Joe ---

Thanks for the info.... Now that it is all cleaned up, here is the number off the pulley: 397721180 CE 09. What does this fit? Would it work so I can get this car on the road?

        Thanks -

I think that you've got a few too many digits in this part number; I expect that the number is 3972180. This is a 3 groove pulley used for many 69-75 PASSENGER CARS with 350 cid engines and A/C. Passenger cars from 1969-on used the long leg water pump and this pulley is designed for use with that configuration. For the most part, pullies designed for use with long leg style water pumps are unique to that configuration and pullies designed for use with short leg style water pumps (ALL Corvettes and pre-69 passenger cars) are unique to that configuration. The "twain" does not meet.

FYI.... Called two local Chevy dealers in search of the pulleys.... The PS is still available. The crankshaft pulley according to the GM guys is "Out of production." :-( What to do..... Geez -- thought when I bought a 350, the parts would be easier to get than a 454. Seems like it is the other way around! First the Oil Pan,,,, now this!

Are you sure that you gave them the correct part number for the crank pulley? It's GM #3858533. As far as I know, this part is still available. However, it's possible that it's been VERY recently discontinued or on national backorder. If so, have them locate one for you in another dealer's stock. There are plenty of these "out there".
