    A-Arm Dust shield staples

While replacing the front shocks on a very late production 66 convertible I noticed there were no visible staple holes in either front fender well for attachment of the A-Arm dust flaps. The installed flaps look quite old and are attached with what looks like yellow weatherstrip cement. All of the bonds and bonding strips are intact so I believe these are original fender well panels. My current early production 66 and a previous mid production coupe both had staples.

My understanding is that all mid-year cars had stapled A-Arm flaps and other dust flaps in the engine compartment. Any thoughts would be appreciated. We will eventually have to replace the flaps and I want to put them back like they are supposed to be.

My current and previous mid-years have (had) an unpainetd pop rivet inside the hood lip, one on each side to which are attached j clips for holding the main wiring harness on the left side and the heater blower motor harness on the right side. This car does not have either pop rivets, evidence of holes, or clips. Again, I can find no evidence that any of the front end panels have been replaced. This is a two owner car with the immediate prior owner having owned the car 17 years.

Bill - I have a late June 1966 build date and there are staples.

The lack of pop rivits is another sign that the front may not be original. Although the pop rivits should be painted not unpainted, as they were there before the body paint. They all had staples to hold the shields. Does it have the lower shield strips right a on the bottom edge and does it have stapled upper seals?

------If you can find no sign of either the staple holes or pop-rivet holes being filled then I can almost guarantee you that the pieces have been replaced.Just looked at a 66(supposedly never hit)in New Jersey with the very same problem. One inner fender was not replaced though and still had the staples. You should probably look at the turn signal corners too as they may still have the 63-64 bumps in the upper inside corners.Lower valence, between the turn signal corners, also has tabs on the replacement pieces from Chevrolet. If the tabs are there or any sign of them, then that piece has been replaced as well.Hope this helps!...........Bill S
