I have a 1965 convertable with a non-original 327-300hp motor and am in the process of installing the original rebuilt 327-300hp motor in it. Since my transmission had been jumping out of 2nd when down shifting I thought it was a good time to rebuild the tranny. Upon disassembly I found that the main drive gear had severely eaten away the case at the main drive gear bearing. Normally the case is about 3/8" thick at this point but mine has been "machined" by the drive gear so that it is only 1/4". The transmission is a Muncie 4 speed # 3885010 and the tail shaft is #3857584. I believe my rear axle is a 3.31 or 3.36. I have been told that the transmission is from a 1966 Corvette based on the number. I have also been told that I cannot use this transmission with my car. Any ideas out there? Is it possible that the damage was caused because this transmission is somehow incompatable? I would like to find another case and reuse the guts if possible. Should I forget this idea and find a 1965 vintage tranny? Any help is appreciated.

Functionally, your trans is interchangable with the '65 trans, but the '65 used a case with the part number ending in 325. The input and cluster gears are also different from that used in the 010 case. That said, you can either find a proper 65 trans, they are relatively plentiful, or have your case repaired. There is a fellow in New York I believe his name is Steve Becthold how does the work to repair you case, curt if the case is that badly damaged, the Cluster gear is likley damaged also, and you might be better off just replacing the whole trans.- Top

Any Muncie M20,M21,M22 will work in your car. The splines may be different from what you have, ie: possible clutch and yoke change. Your Muncie has a 7/8" cluster shaft. 1966 models up had 1" shaft, so this would make a difference in which case you get if you are swapping your old parts into a new case. There is other differences, example shoulders of syncronizers, if you start swapping parts around. Too many possible parts scenarios to discuss in this format. Your Muncie has a 7/8" cluster shaft. 1966 models up had 1" shaft, so this would make a difference in which case you get if you are swapping your old parts into a new case. There is other differences, example shoulders of syncronizers, if you start swapping parts around. Too many possible parts scenarios to discuss in this format. I agree. These cases are cheap and readily available. This would also eliminate any future cross matching of parts problems. For approximately $250+ you would be good to go with a like new Muncie, of course if you rebuild it yourself. Use your current tail housing.
