    Rear Diff. stampings

I went and looked at a rear end casing yesterday that is in a friend's '70 big block. I went to look at the date/gear ratio number code stamped on the bottom, and there was NO stamping. There was NO evidence of grinding or any "foul play"...it just had no numbers on it. Did service rear ends come without any stampings, or were there some cars that came out without any codes on the rear? We have no idea IF the rear end is original OR what gears are in it(that's kinda what we were trying to figure out!)Any insight?

Jeremy, while I am sure that you looked at the correct area I will say that I had a 66 that I swear didn't have a single character stamped into the casing. It wasn't until I took the differential out to rebuild it that I was able to see some of the letters and numbers. It took inderect light, at a very sharp angle, reflecting on a freshly cleaned differential.

I took a wire brush, Brake cleaner, and one of those nuclear garage halogen lights under the car with me. I thought the same thing, maybe it was stamped on the edge or something...nothing. Just blank metal. No clue. If I get rained out today at work I'm gonna go over and take another look just to make sure, though.

Check the casting date on the side of the differetial carrier case to see if it's consistent with the build date of the car. If so, your differential case might just be one that didn't get stamped properly.

As far as I know, complete differential carrier assemblies, when available, did carry some sort of stamped coding, although likely not the same as PRODUCTION coding. Complete units have been discontinued for MANY years. However, bare cases were also once available for SERVICE. These cases carried NO stamped coding. I know that for sure; I have one in my "collection".
